Before You Get Up; Smile

Whatever your thoughts are or how tired you are. Before you do anything else, smile. If you have to force yourself to it. Just do it. We could go a long way of discussing why this works, but for now, just accept both other peoples experience and science, this works.

Be Grateful For Your Life; You Are Alive

www.ohingeneral.com - gratitude to make your dayNo matter how bad you think your day is, it can be great. If you make it a habit of being grateful for the life you have, you will automatically start looking for better ways to live. Winnie The Pooh said it as well ( this is a very free translation/interpretation) ;

Every day is not great, but there is something great in every day

When You Start Running Around; STOP A Minute

Say Hello To At Least One Person You Don’t Know

You can also say hello to me 🙂

You should do that every day. It feels a bit awkward in the beginning, but after a few days, you get used to it.

You will be surprised by all the different kinds of responses you get. Most of them make you smile.

Just saying the small word hello, actually is a sign that someone notices you. We should all be better at acknowledging other people, after all, we are all doing our best to make life awesome, right?

Say Thank You For Something

www.ohingeneral.com - say thank you to make your dayThe absolute best way is to find a piece of paper and write down 3 things you can be grateful for. Say thank you for those things. These can be reminders for you that no matter how bad, there is something to be grateful for.

  1. Great insight into how to make my day!! As I was reading this post, I imagined myself doing the 7 life hacks. Just thinking about them made me feel good within. This is what I believe we all need to live a happy, fulfilling and awesome life. And it’s not all about us – I like hack 4!! I must say I do try to do this, but mostly to ‘familiar faces’. I will definitely try this on strangers. Thanks for a great post. Simple hacks, but very effective!!!

    • Hi Jackie, thank you for your kind words 🙂

When we want to change something, it is “normal” to start with all the big changes, just to find out it can be very hard. These, small, but effective life hacks are starting different changes in life, that makes us wonder how we really treat ourselves. Then the most spectacular journey to a better life starts and as long as you follow your own direction, excitement never ends.

Great to hear that you take action on these small steps. Good luck on your journey 🙂

  2. I´ve done all three of those scenarios in my non productive days. When you see it written down, it makes you realise how crazy it is. This is a great article about how simple things can turn your day and life around. I started the year with “being grateful.” I will put the rest into practice.

    Thank you for posting

    Sean

    • Hi Sean,
great to see that you like the stuff. Yes, they are simple, but very effective. I think we all want to do these small things, but somehow they are easily neglected, at first, and then forgotten.

Have a great life with the simple stuff 🙂

  3. I agree completely. It’s the little things that have the biggest impact. Be grateful, be kind, be cheerful. Be the person that you want to meet that day. Start with that smile and you are just asking for a good day, Thanks for the inspiration that I needed today

    • Thank you for sharing, Joe.

Yes, the small things, when you put them together, makes a huge difference. The little smile work like the butterfly effect. Small things have a great impact on their surroundings, and makes a difference for a lot of people. As you mention, what we give, is reflected in what we get.

Keep up the smile, and thank you for dropping by 🙂

  4. Hi I love this post well done. It’s a great way to really thin about changing your day and also you look on life. I love the idea that just from this post you can be making a difference in thousands of peoples lives. I love the idea of just going out of your way to say hello to strangers this is a great way to share your positivity I thought I did but your post made me realise I do need to do it more. I especially like the idea of writing 3 things to be thankful for. I have shared this post on my twitter and google in a hope that others use your life hacks too. 🙂
I have bookmarked your page to keep reflecting on it. Thanks for sharing and caring, keep up the great work!

    • Thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it and hope a lot of other people will thank you for doing that. There is something about the complicated world we live in, when you think of all the details, it really is complicated. When you look at one thing at a time, you will notice the beauty of the small stuff. As human beings, we are developing very slowly, but the fact that we can connect with the whole world gives us ideas that we develop so fast. We don’t. The possibilities seems to be endless, which is a good thing when you look at it the right way. At the same time, this will be chaos for some, without that being necessary.

It’s like trying to make a truck drive Formula 1, and expect it to win. I may need to explain that…
We are all in different situations in life. We have different interest and we do a lot of different things, both personally and professionally. If you try to do something you’re not good at, and improve, you will keep interested in it as long as you improve, but you will never manage to keep doing that the rest of your life, because its costs are greater than the gain. When you do something you are good at, you might call it talent (but, it doesn’t have to be), you will automatically see how to improve. This also means that you see where you have to put in the effort, to keep improving. As long as you take care of those moments, you will keep improving and keep the interest for as long as you want it. The gain is greater than the cost, and that is what it is about.

The total of this, is that when everybody do their stuff, it will look like chaos when you look at it from far away, but as you get closer, you will see how different people doing different things, makes a complete whole, that simply makes life worth it.

These few steps in this article, the small stuff that makes the day, goes beyond the above mentioned areas of life. These easy steps are basics, more or less tools we are born with, but “learn” to forget. They do mean a lot for us, and as an example, since you mention it, the 3 things to be thankful for, are (for most people, at least) things we normally would be exactly that, thankful for, if we hadn’t forgotten it when we look at the chaos that the complete picture gives us. Taking care of the small details, makes us stronger and helps us build the strength we need to keep doing what we love to do.

Thanks for bookmarking, sharing and reading. I appreciate it, thank you.

  5. What a great post! I like your suggestions on how to get things going in the morning and what to do at night. One thing for sure is to be grateful. The more grateful you are with what you have, the more you’ll receive.

Sometimes we get so busy and I’m a mom, so I take care of the kids, my husband, and often forget about myself. Your advice about doing something that makes me feel good is one I will take to heart.

So glad I found your post!
    Grace

    • Thank you for your kind words, Grace. It’s also greate that you found your favorite. Life is full of opportunities to forget about yourself, these few small steps may work as a reminder of how important you are in your own life. That again helps in two ways, you are reminded how important it is to take care of yourself and how important it is to be there for others. If everyone did these small steps, a lot of misunderstanding would have been avoided simply by making us aware of the facts that life is supposed to be good. Then we would not be so suspicious to other people.

May your days be great with these life hacks.

  6. Thank you for the checklist, Odd Helge. SO beautifully suggested. SO simple. SO true.

I do a few of those things on your list and one thing that I have my 9 yr old doing EVERY day is the gratitude list. Each night before she goes to sleep, she tells me 3 things that she is thankful for. Sometimes, it is the same 3 things for the last month, LOL, but that’s ok, the main purpose of the exercise is to remind ourselves to be grateful for the things available to us.

I am thankful for your words of expression. They have served as a gentle reminder for me and one of the many ways that I should ‘fine-tune’ my life on a DAILY basis.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • I’m pleased to see that you find inspiration in my post, Michelle. Thanks for telling me, I’m grateful.

Nice story about your nine year old, and what a great exercise you have made. Gratitude is very important, but too often I notice the lack of it. Usually I try to understand why so many people have forgotten this gesture, and usually I come up with the possibility that people are to busy to use a 3 seconds greeting to someone. Having the same three topics on the gratitude lists, at least show that she is grateful. Some things are worth mentioning several times, because they represent a valuable lesson. Maybe she is planning her dream life?

Keep up your daily exercises and you’ll make your life a happy one, it’s worth it. What you do daily is what makes life excited, when you do it right. To me, it looks like you are on your own path, just make sure you keep it visible and the world will smile right back at you.

      Enjoy Life!

  7. I love your ideas about how to make your day, and thus your life, positive.
Life is amazing, and we should always remember that and be grateful for it. And if we can make someone else feel better about their lives too, then so much the better! I do so agree with you about saying hello to someone new – I make a point of doing that too, although it is really a natural thing to do to smile at people as you pass them in the street. It is very rare that they do not smile back, and you can tell that they appreciate it; sadly some people also look surprised that you should bother! sometimes also, you can tell that jut by smiling and saying hello you have brightened their day – pluses all round!
Thank you so much for these helpful reminders 🙂

    • Hi Chrissie,
if everyone saw what life can give, I’m sure that the world would look very different. It’s not about taking, but giving. The more you give, the more you get. It doesn’t matter who you give it to, you’ll get something in return anyway, simply because you’re aware of it. These small life hacks are meant as wake-up calls for those who know there is something more. These few steps take away the fog, so you can see clearer what really matters in life. We are easily distracted in the busy everyday, but there are always someone about to wake up. We all have to do our best effort in making the new living for these people a good one. They all deserve it. Life is worth living as it is supposed to be, and that is possible for anyone.

It’s amazing that you also keep smiling to people you don’t know. The reactions are very different from each other, but I think of it as inspiration. Making someone happy, or at least, aware that they are seen, always makes them in a lot better mood. I would say that even those who seems to be looking weird at you, wake up to see that it is possible to smile even to them.

I appreciate your great comment here, Chrissie, thank you.

      May your days stay wonderful.

  8. Hello Ode! I like the positive motivation. The picture of you at the lobster place makes you look like a person that knows how to have fun.

These are all great tips. Thank you for sharing them.

  9. Hi Odd,
I just had to leave another comment. Just wanted to say this post was a great reminder for me. I know the stresses of life can get to anyone, but it’s so nice to read something as inspirational as your post. I tend to forget, amidst working full-time, taking care of my precious kids and hubby and running around for errands, that life is to be appreciated. Don’t sweat the small stuff, right?

I’ll be returning to your website when I need a reminder to smile, be grateful and count all my blessings!

    Take care! Cindy

    • Hi Cindy,

I appreciate your comments, this also helps me in keeping that motivation in the right direction. Living a life is a serious line of tasks, and when we don’t take care of the small stuff, we have nothing to build the big stuff on.

All the major tasks we do in a day are built by the sum of the small tasks, so when we make sure that we work in ourselves, we will get the understanding of why we do the other stuff, the heavy lifting during the day. When we understand how everything relates to each other, it’s easier to have it done, at the right time and for the right reasons. This usually also make us do it better.

In a way the small stuff makes the hard stuff easier done, better performed and the mood you’re in is also better. Life is wonderful when you manage this combination. Every day won’t be like that, of course. Having a goal to make more of these days than the others, should be a good start, though.

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate your visit, and your future visits.

May your future make you smile today 🙂

  10. Thank you Sondra.

I’m living after this saying: “We’re not only here to have fun, we’re also here to enjoy ourselves.” Then I do that.

When we get to serious about trying to figure out how to do different stuff, we sometimes lose touch with the fun part of exploring new areas in life. It’s important to keep up the motivation of constantly learning something new, so we get to open up new perspectives on how to live the good life we want.

Enjoy your life, and keep reminding yourself of the good stuff, and you’ll see more of the bright sides that life has to offer.

May your future make you smile today.
